Gesture control for the Mac

Most of us are familiar with Microsoft's great invention of the Kinect that allows users to use their body motions to control video games. Based on similar concepts, Mac users will now have a chance to use an application known as Flutter to help them control iTunes and Spotify.

Flutter utilizes the built-in webcam of the Macs to help them register hand gestures from up to 6 feet away. It allows music and videos in iTunes and music in Spotify to be played and paused by flashing the webcam a stop type hand gesture.

Unfortunately for Windows users, the application is currently only available for Macs. Currently, Flutter is in early developmental stages and can be downloaded for free from here. If developers see success with the app they plan to add controls for other applications such as Netflix and YouTube in the near future.

It is hard to tell if Flutter will become popular with public, but if Microsoft's Kinect is any indicator, it is a good possibility. Hopefully they will add more functionality besides the single gesture for pause and playback. If you were to try it, what applications other than iTunes, Spotify, Netflix, and YouTube would you like to see? What other functionality would you desire?

  1. Your blog is looking great! One more thing you should add is a list of related articles at the bottom of each post. If you list other individual blog posts like your own, it will help drive traffic back to your blog. Great work!
